The honest answer: you generally should not plug your AC into an extension cord. Is it safe to plug an AC into an extension cord?

In short, no — not as a normal setup. Manufacturers explicitly tell you to plug the air conditioner straight into a wall outlet, and many manuals say so in bold. Here’s why that warning exists:

  • High startup current. When the compressor kicks in, the AC pulls a large surge. A cord that isn’t rated for it heats up at the connection points.
  • Voltage drop. A thin or long cord drops voltage, which makes the compressor work harder, run hotter, and wear out faster.

If your cord ever feels warm to the touch, that’s a danger sign — unplug it immediately. Never run a cord under a rug, through a doorway where it gets pinched, or daisy-chained into a power strip.

The same caution applies, and portable units are often the most explicit about it: many portable AC manuals state plainly that extension cords are not recommended and can be a fire hazard. They draw high amperage and aren’t designed for the added resistance a cord introduces.
