Can You Take Freon Out of an Air Conditioner?

ByRalph P. Sita Updated onJanuary 21, 2025

Freon, a crucial gas used in air conditioners, helps cool the air by circulating through the system. When the air conditioner operates, the compressor pressurizes the Freon and pushes it through coils. As it flows through these coils, the Freon absorbs heat from the room and expels it outside, facilitating the cooling process.

To remove Freon from your air conditioner, first locate the Freon lines typically, there are two hoses, one for the suction side and one for the discharge side. Use a wrench or pliers to loosen the bolts or screws securing the lines and carefully detach them from the unit to avoid damage. Position a bucket or container beneath the lines to catch any potential spillage. Then, open the valves on each hose, allowing the Freon to escape into the container. You may need a screwdriver or other tool to fully open the valves. Let the Freon flow out completely, and once emptied, close both valves to seal the lines.

How Much Does It Cost to Remove Freon from AC Unit?

If your AC unit uses Freon, you may be wondering how much it will cost to have the Freon removed.

The answer depends on a few factors, including the type of AC unit you have and the company you hire to do the job.

The first thing to know is that two types of AC units use Freon: those with a fixed orifice tube and those with an expansion valve.

If your AC unit has a fixed orifice tube, the removal process will be less expensive because there is no need to adjust the refrigerant level.

On the other hand, if your AC unit has an expansion valve, the removal process will be more expensive because the technician will need to adjust the refrigerant level before removing it.

In addition, the cost of Freon removal will vary depending on which company you hire to do the job.

Some companies charge by the hour, while others charge a flat rate.

Be sure to ask about pricing before hiring a company to remove Freon from your AC unit.

On average, expect to pay between $100 and $200 for Freon removal from your AC unit.

However, if your AC unit has an expansion valve, you may end up paying closer to $300 for the service.

Can Freon Be Removed And Reused?

Although Freon is not an ozone-depleting substance, it is a potent greenhouse gas.

As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated its phase-out in favor of more environmentally friendly refrigerants.

This means that, although Freon can be removed and reused, it will eventually become obsolete.

Will It Hurt to Run Ac Without Freon?

No, it will not hurt to run your air conditioner without Freon.

However, it will not cool as efficiently and may cause the unit to overheat.
