Where Is My AC Temperature Sensor? How to Find It

Your AC temperature sensor is a small probe (often called a thermistor) located on or near the evaporator coil inside the indoor unit. On a window or portable air conditioner it sits just in front of the evaporator coil, usually clipped to the fins behind the front grille and control panel. On a central or mini-split system it is mounted at the indoor coil and reports to the control board. The sensor measures the temperature of the air or coil and tells the control panel when to start and stop cooling — so when your AC short-cycles, won’t turn on, or won’t hold a set temperature, a misplaced or failed temperature sensor is a common culprit.
